Sir,

I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of yesterday’s date, enclosing certain documents relative to a complaint made against P. Long of Lake Temisquata, for having detained an English Mail, copies of which I shall transmit to Mr. Phair Post Master of Frederickton, requesting him, to ascertain if the facts as stated by the certificates of Henri Tardie & Ch. Beaulieu of the River St. John, can be supported by their Affidavits or otherwise. By the Records of this Office it would appear that Mr. Long was employed for upwards of 20 years as a courier on the route hence to New-Brunswick and that during that period his conduct was such as to merit being strongly recommended by Mr. Heriot, late Deputy Post Master General, for the allowance of 2s a day, granted to him from the Military Chest, not as a compensation for former services, but clearly for the occasional assistance required of him in forwarding the Public Service, and more particularly the English Mails. I should therefore hope that Mr Long has it in his power to show in a more satisfactory way than that of merely denying that the charges brought against him are correct, and that he is still deserving the allowance made to him. So soon as I receive Mr. Phair’s communications on this subject I shall transmit the same to you for the information of His Excellency the Commander in Chief.
