Declaration by Charles Beaulieu against Philip Long on
the delay of the English Mails, dated September 23, 1816, at Rivier St.

below Madawaska 23th Sept. 1816
I Charles Bowlieu do hereby declare that
when on my way with the Province Mail from Quebec in the month of May
last, was met by Henry Tardie on the Madawaska River who was bringing
the English Mail from Fredericton that Mr Long and his son in law was in
Company with me down the river, and that on my taking charge of the said
English Mail from Henry Tardie, I requested Mr Long and his son in law
to return with me to assist in crossing the Portage, as there were three
bag which Mr Long as well as his son in law repeatedly refused to do, Mr
Long saying that I might take the English Mail back again to the Trout
River where I might get assistance ___ that on my crossing to the Trout
River, Mr Long stoped but a short (?) and went on his way, without
himself making or (?) what agreement might he made for the furtherance
of said English Mail.
