Muster Roll of Capt Jn

Howards Company of Nyork

Volunteers  Novr 1777

Note: Phillip Long’s name did not appear on the Muster Roll of John Howard’s company dated February 1778, and taken at Paulus Hook.  We can only infer that he changed companies between      November 1777 and February 1778.  Obviously, the fact that he was sick could be part the reason for changing regiments (he did lose an eye sometime during the War).  To date, the next Muster roll entry for Phillip Long is in  1781 on Long Island in the West Florida Royal Foresters.

(PAC, RG8 “C” Series, Vol. 1873)

Raised by Thurnbull in January 1776.  The New York Volunteers were renamed the 3rd American Regiment in May 1779.

The New York Volunteers were raised by Oliver DeLancey. They were mainly in communities loyal to the King on Long Island, the largest being the New York Loyalist Corps. Units of the New York Volunteers participated in the invasion of their home territory in July 1776.
