1781 - The
War Moves to Savannah with the KAR
Key Events of 1781
Interesting Additional Information
The KAR was involved in the violent skirmishes at
Hobkirk’s Hill, South Carolina on April 25, 1781. Later, the regiment
was sent to Savannah, Georgia to support the British occupation of that
city. They remained there for the rest of the war. The name Philip Long
appears on Muster Rolls for two regiments: the West Florida Royal
Foresters (WFRF) and the Kings American Regiment.
In the case of the WFRF, his name appears under
Captain Adam Chrysties’ Company, New town, Long Island, New York on the
June 24, 1781. In those days, when a soldier went missing without
official explanation or notification, they were listed as “deserters”.
In Philip Long’s case, his absence is indicated as of May 9, 1781.
Philip Long, our ancestor, is also listed under
Captain Isaac Atwood’s Company in the Kings American Regiment. His name
appears on one Muster Roll for 1781 at Savannah, Georgia, from October
25, 1781 to December 24, 1781 (61 days inclusive).
